Abstract
The novels “If I Were a Boy,” “The Flower of Memory,” “For the Defense of the Homeland,” “The Abyss of Love,” and “From Life to Life – Why?” in Albanian literature represent some of the best evidence of a chain in which the sentimental spirit is closely connected with the motif of love and social themes. It is enough to focus attention on a small narrative part from each work to understand and feel the power of the language and discourse used by the authors and, above all, the description of moments that bring beautiful images before our eyes. Belonging to the same genre allows the texts to be viewed in relation to one another, highlighting intertextuality at both structural and content levels, thus identifying the similarities and the specific developments that each novel contains.
This group of novels, and even the novellas of Grameno not cited above, can be summarized under the definition “sentimental-social prose” or “sentimental love prose,” as scholars of Albanian literature also describe them. “If I Were a Boy,” “The Abyss of Love,” and “From Life to Life – Why?” are markers of the unfortunate love of two young people, narrating pain, emotion, generosity, and self-sacrifice. By focusing on the authors selected for this study, we find intertextual connections that exist within their works, enabling communication between texts. This communication among these works is evident, and the authors themselves do not avoid it; such interaction or exchange is something that we often encounter in literature in general between different works or artistic texts.
